A UN organization that aims to improve reproductive and maternal health globally is the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), originally known as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities. In addition to expanding access to birth control and conducting efforts against obstetric fistula, female genital mutilation, and child marriage, it also develops national healthcare plans and guidelines.
Under the direction of the United Nations Development Fund, the organization started operations in 1969 in New York, United States, as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities. Natalia Kanem is currently the UNFPA executive director.
