About Since 1986, Bandipur National Park has been a member of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. In 1931, the Venugopala Wildlife Park was established over 90 km2 (35 sq mi) of land by the Maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore. Tigers and Bandipur have a long history together. It is one of the last remaining safe havens for the critically endangered Asiatic wild elephant. Thirty reserves have been designated throughout the nation to protect the tiger and its habitat. In addition to the two well-known inhabitants, this national park is home to several other endangered species, including sloth bears, gaurs, Indian rock pythons, jackals, muggers, and four-horned antelopes. Sambar, mouse deer, chital, sloth bears, and the unusual flying lizard are also protected in Bandipur.
