About: Madras Nuclear Power Plant is a comprehensive nuclear power production, fuel reprocessing, and waste treatment facility that includes plutonium fuel fabrication for fast breeder reactors (FBRs). It is also the first nuclear power plant entirely built in India. Its two units can produce 220 MW of electricity each. The station’s first and second units both reached a critical state in 1983 and 1985, respectively. The reactor building at the station includes two containment shells, improving protection in the event of a loss-of-coolant accident. In Kalpakkam, there is also an interim storage facility (ISF).
