UNICEF is a department of the UN responsible for providing aid to children all over the world in the areas of development and humanitarianism. UNICEF is now officially known as the United Nations Children’s Fund, having formerly been known as the full name of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration established the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund in New York on December 11, 1946, to provide immediate assistance to mothers and children impacted by World War II. The agency that replaced it is called UNICEF. Catherine Mary Russell is currently UNICEF’s executive director.
